Theodorus de Bry (1528 – 27 March 1598) was an engraver, goldsmith and editor who traveled around Europe, starting from the city of Liège (where he was born and grew up), then to Strasbourg, Antwerp, London and Frankfurt, where he settled.

The Fort Caroline Massacre
17.5 cm x 15 cm copperplate engraving, 34 cm x 20.5 cm sheet size, Frankfurt, engraved circa 1591, printed circa 1631
We are pleased to offer this scarce and historically important example of of an original leaf engraved and published by the famed Theodor de Bry and sons with a plate depicting an iconic 16th century image of the Spanish massacre in 1565 at the French Huguenot outpost ofFort Carolinein what is now Florida. The plate depicts the final desparate plea for mercy by the doomed Jacques Ribault to the brutal Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés while his fellow Frenchmen are murdered outside. Trained as a goldsmith, Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) mastered the newly flourishing art of copperplate engraving and with his sons Johann Theodor (1560-1623) and Johann Israel (1565-1609) embarked on a visionary project - a publication of a series of illustrated volumes on the exploration of the New World that became known as the Grand Voyages. Writing in his 1976 study Discovering the New Worldthe historian Michael Alexander noted that the De Brys "brought to the European public the first realistic visualization of the exotic world opened up across the Atlantic by the explorers, conquerors and settlers." Most earlier published accounts of the New World either lacked illustrations or featured crude woodcuts, often borrowed from earlier sources and in some cases not even related to the actual subject. The De Bry volumes, by contrast, featured what the patriarch called his "diligent pains in engraving the pictures on copper plates" from original sources that in the words of the scholar Bernadette Bucher "show a spirit of documentation and ethnographic observation rare in the iconography of the time." Indeed, De Bry's exhaustive series of masterfully engraved prints depicting first-hand accounts of travel and exploration (continued by his sons and successors for decades after his death) provided the first attempt to introduce a pictorial image of the New World as a whole and many of the De Bry images have taken their rightful place as being unprecedented and unparalleled in their historic importance. This plate is without question one of the most sought-after and significant of the entire De Bry output as it is derived from the work of an eyewitness to the massacre and one of the few survivors to escape - the noted French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues (1533–1588). Le Moyne accompanied the French expedition of Ribault and René Laudonnière on their exploration of Florida and was in residence at Fort Caroline when the Spanish attacked. As the first European artist to travel to the New World with the express purpose of recording images in sketches and paintings, Le Moyne's story is recounted in a fine book by Miles Harvey Painter in a Savage Land in which he rightly notes that the historical record would be "impoverished without the pioneering work" of Le Moyne and De Bry. Indeed, it is difficult to overstate the historical importance and impact of this image - as the historian S.E. Morison has noted, "the atrocity shocked Europeans even in that bloody era of religious strife" and it was the publication of this plate many years after the event that brought the massacre to wide public attention. An exceptionally well-preserved example, this rare imprint will make an important addition to any collection related to the early exploration and settlement of America.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who founded the first settlement in the Americas at Darien, Panama in 1511, was known for his cruelty towards Indians [Indigenous in Panama aren't hung up on "political correctness" and balboa-ordering-gay-indians-eaten-alive1either "Indigenous" or "Indian" is acceptable] as he expanded his territory and searched for gold. Somewhat contemporaneous is this woodcut by Theodore De Bry (1528-1598) entitled, “Balboa setting his dogs upon Indian practitioners of male love whom he ordered eaten alive by the war dogs”.
